    Wow your courgette bed is bloody❤ enormous, mine are teeny well I only have 1 the rest died and those cabbages!!! I've come to the conclusion I haven't got a clue, I just plant and hope for the best then complain I've not got anything. 😂 To be fair I think I had contaminated manure this year... killed most things I planted now other plot holders are agreeing with me. Your plot and garden are so productive. It's always nice to see your harvests. 😊

    We have several plots like that. I get so frustrated as we have a healthy waiting list and some of these people have had plots on the site in that state for a good few seasons now, so unfair to other plot holders, like you say it creates habitats for everything we don't want and the weed seeds are just awful. I can't understand the why they won't give them up so someone else can have a chance to grow something. Can you grow club root resistant plants next year? They showed a trial of that on Beech Grove.

    That’s a great idea with the shed for the rook Andy - he was lucky to be found by you, and hopefully he’ll be back to full health by the time he gets his ‘big boy’ feathers! I’ve given upon my French beans this year - very poor germination and small stunted plants 😕. After seeing your lettuce, I’m determined to grow more next year - supermarket salad is just awful on the whole! Take care & look after yourself 😊(p.s. sweet peas looking lovely! Mine have been great this year 👍)

    Thanks for the update Andy - great to see this fantastic harvest! Like you say though, it’s a lot of work - hope your back is ok and you manage to get a bit of a rest in between jobs. Those cauliflowers look lovely - I’ve never made piccalilli myself - I’d be interested to see how you make it. Good luck with the gig … and a day’s fishing in the peace & quiet sounds just the ticket 😊👍. Take care, & I look forward to hearing about your rook friend.

    Hi Andy, interested on your thoughts on the pea moth at this time of year? Thanks

    • @andy160676
      @andy160676 20 дней назад

      Its always a risk growing a later crop of peas and i have had them the odd time but never had them cause too much problem caused by them with only a small number of pods being affected. Ive never bothered to net peas apart from at early stages to stop birds and rabbits attacking them but that only tends to happen on the first planting. I wonder sometimes about the pea moth not being in large numbers on our site as it tends to have a lot of bats at dusk and the odd owl visits so i imagine they may catch a good numbet of the moths maybe. Cheers Andy

    Same here with the dwarf French beans but the cobra & another climber in the polytunnel are racing along now & flowering. Sungold's the only one of six varieties of tomato which is producing ripe fruit so far, a whole six weeks behind. Gherkin cucumbers have gone mad & I've already pickled a year's supply so I think I'll pull them to give more space to the bell peppers.

  • @GARDENER42
    @GARDENER42 22 дня назад

    I just added another 1.2m³ compost bay 10 days ago & with grass clippings, donations of material & my own weeds & harvest waste, it's currently half full & running at just under 70°C. My cauli's were a disaster, as I was ill for 10 days, then it was a couple of days before I looked at them - all blown & full of slugs. I had the last of my garlic up a couple of weeks back. These were the ones I planted along one side in the polytunnel from my own saved bulbs. They started off five years ago as a bulb from Aldi which sprouted & I've kept the two best bulbs each year & they've got better every year. Best ones are now close to 3" across - twice the size of the originals. If you need a hand with the polytunnel, let me know & I'll come down. I know how difficult it is with only one person (impossible doing the cover really tight) from putting my own up last year.

    I have the same bean issue wrt germinating… not a sausage. Only cobra and hunter this year. For the clubroot, it doesn’t seem to affect my red cabbage, Brussels or kale just the caulis and broccoli. 🤔They were mullered by slugs… and as for chunky tomatoes, yes mine are super chunky this year…but good crop. It just reminds me to just plant a bit more than I need to get something/anything. Good luck at the allotment, Sandra

      @@andrewredmond799 id seen online a while back about making an onion brew by chopping onions and steeping them in water for a week or 2 then watering it into the soil which wakes up the white rot but it has no host plants to mutilply on so over time weakens it and id heard good results just done over 2 growing seasons when used in the spring and summer and autumn of year 1 then just spring and summer of the second year then plants were put in the following spring from seedlings that were quite large to give them less time in the soil and no traces had been found at harvest and they repeated this on a 3 yr rotation and it worked and just grew other families of plants in the beds inbetween rotation years. It might be worth a try if you started now and then come 2026 try a small area of plants so it has had 2 waterings this year and 3 next year the last one being late summer. I dont think it needs a strong mix so you would probably mix 1lt of brew to 10lts and water into damp soil. Might be good for growing cartots or parsnips in as i imagine it would pong of onions a bit and mask the carrot smell. Im thinking of making some brew but with spring onion tops and any left over onion parts i can freeze then add them to water when i have a good hand full.

    Agree about having allotment rules that state the plot needs to be kept relatively tidy. Not really fair on other plot holders having all those weeds and grasses. Also not really fair on people in the queue for a plot if it's not being used. Our adjacent plot had high weeds two years in a row and thankfully the holder finally got around to cutting and looks like they will work the plot now. They did spray the cut grass all over my plot though which was pretty annoying for me at the time.

    Interesting you mention your ME/CFS. I was diagnosed with it a few years back. I got an allotment last year and it's been a struggle setting things up but pleased with the progress I've made. It's only a tiny 60m2 bit of land which is just about manageable for me. Really frustrating though when the PEM hits though and I want to get to the plot but just can't. I'm fortunate though in that our allotment site is literally a 3 or 4 minute walk from the house. I don't think I'd have been able to manage if it were miles away. What a shame about the club root. It's my first year having a proper attempt at growing brassicas and so far had a few Calabrese and Cauliflower. Small heads but not complaining seeing as it's my first go. Like you my peas have all been a disaster. 3 sowings each of podding, mange tout and sugar snap and only had a couple of handfuls of peas. My french beans have been a struggle too. Only now starting to get a few beans. Had to pull the first sowings out as they were looking diseased. Hopefully next year the weather will be better.

    My Santero are starting to topple - Bedfordshire Champion still going strong. Dunno what happened to my cauli's (All Year Round) as only one was more than 2" across. Stripped the foliage off the last five containers of Charlotte today & was trying to clear everything to water in slug nematodes but it started chucking it down. Plot next to mine has a new tenant (I hit it with weed killer last year to stop seeds) & it's covered in rosebay willow herb. She cleared about half then nothing, so I pulled the rest before it seeded & chucked it into my new compost bay (a second 4' cube). I lime my brassica beds every year before planting, then repeat halfway through. Thankfully no clubroot so far. Worst thing I had was my last plot - onion white rot, which made me give it up in the end.

    Some good ideas there Andy. A nice size for a small area. It's great of B&Q to support you and free advertising for them. Take care.

    A good amount of potatoes there Andy. My Charlottes in tubs, have all yellowed and died off a bit too early this year. My peas have been rubbish. I've only got 5 that germinated! New seeds too! Oh well. 😊 I'm so glad you mentioned the bird that you rescued. How is it? Take care.

    Everything looks healthy on your plot, despite the rodent tunnels and the bad, rainy weather, we've had. Great stuff! Take care.
